Thanksgiving’s around the corner and there are still a few places to find a locally-raised turkey in Lancaster County.

These farms and retailers sell pasture-raised turkeys. In addition, some have fresh, not-frozen turkeys and some are organic.

Oasis at Bird-in-Hand’s turkeys are raised at a farm a mile and a half from the business. They’re pasture-raised, free of antibiotics and GMOs and not frozen, says office manager Sara Bushong.

“We feel that fresh turkeys are the best,” she says.

Lancaster Farm Fresh’s member farmers have raised turkeys for Thanksgiving for about five years, says Casey Spacht, co-op founder. The farmers saw turkeys as an opportunity for extra income. This year, five member farms in southern Lancaster County raise organic turkeys.

Remember, these turkeys are first-come, first-serve and some sizes are already sold-out.

Also, Meadow Run Farm in Ephrata Township has a new farm in Schuylkill County where its turkeys were raised this year.

Owner-operator Marcus Horst used to butcher the turkeys just before Thanksgiving. After a few cold falls and an October snowstorm, it became more difficult for the turkeys to get the grass that improves their health and flavor.

“The weather we’re having now, I’m glad they’re in the freezer,” he says.

Free range, GMO-free turkeys, 11 to 23 pounds; $3.50 per pound. Order at the farm store, 727 Rettew Mill Road, or call 717-733-4832. These turkeys are frozen. If you order by Monday (or Tuesday for smaller birds), farm staff will start thawing the turkey before pick-up.
