BEIRUT, LEBANON (5:45 P.M.) – Firefights have erupted between the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) and Turkey-led forces in the Afrin region of Aleppo Governonate. The clashes come after both sides shelled one another with artillery yesterday.
According to Kurdish sources, Turkey-led militants made an attack on the village of Sheikh Issa, just east of the strategic town of Tall Rifat. Through the use of heavy machine guns and anti-aircraft guns mounted on Toyota pickups, local YPG forces were able to stave off the rebel attack.
The town of Tall Rifat is a high-value objective for Turkey-led forces in northern Aleppo. The rebel proxies who seek to take control of the town from the YPG make no secret of it either.
Over the last month, and even before, rebel forces have repeatedly launched what appears to be probing attacks on the villages to the east of Tall Rifat, likely to test YPG defenses in the event that they receive permission to launch a full-scale offensive in the Afrin region.
