In this occasional series, the Daily News offers leisure alternatives to avoid the tourist crush along Emerald Coast beaches.

NICEVILLE — No shirt, no shoes, no sand, no problem.

Turkey Creek Park is one of those places locals don’t want people to know about. While popular, it’s still a place to get away from the crowds you find along the beaches.

Sunday afternoon, Scott Neel and his two sons, Austin and Connor, took turns jumping into the cold creek in their American flag swim trunks.

“I come here probably three times a week,” said Scott, who lives in Valparaiso. “I’m a freshwater guy, to me it’s cooler, cleaner … and I don’t like sharks. I’ll come after here after work, I always keep a towel in my car.”

Whether you’re looking for a scenic place to walk or run or you’d like to float in the freshwater, Turkey Creek is a perfect spot to enjoy the outdoors.

Some may choose to float, paddle board or kayak along the creek while some pick one of the many jumping platforms to lay out or play in the water.

Longtime Niceville resident Kathy Erickson said she brings visiting family to the creek regularly.

“We have a pool and we still like to come here,” she said as she waits for kids to come around the corner in their rubber ducky float.

Erickson said the trick is to park at the front of the park and walk the mile-long boardwalk to the end to begin your float adventure.

“That way, when you come back you don’t have too walk far to your car,” she said.
