Donald Trump has ‘joked’ that he is a despot who wants to be president for sixteen years

Speaking about tax cuts in the White House rose garden Thursday, Trump referred to remarks he made last month about serving an indefinite term in the White House.

He said: ‘We’re cutting record numbers of regulations.

‘We’ve cut more regulations in a year, in a quarter, than any administration.

‘Shall we go back to sixteen years.

‘Can we do that? Can we have it extended?

‘You know the last time i jokingly said that, the papers said ‘He’s got despotic tencendies.

‘Pfft. no, im not looking to do it, unless you want to do it. That’s ok.’

Speaking at a fundraiser at his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida last month, the President referred to China’s President Xi Jinping, who repealed term limits in his country earlier this year.

Trump said: ‘He’s now president for life. President for life. No, he’s great. And look, he was able to do that.

‘I think it’s great. Maybe we’ll have to give that a shot some day.’

The remarks were made at a private meeting, so it is unclear of the tone Trump intended them to be taken in.

But CNN has highlighted the president’s admiration for authoritarian dictators, including Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, as well as Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected to serve a fourth term in 1944, and would have served 16 years in office had he not died a year later, in 1945.

The super-long administration happened as America struggled to rebuild itself after the Great Depression and help win the Second World War.

In 1947 Congress passed the Twenty-second Amendment to the Constitution, which limits presidents to eight to ten years in the White House.
