Recent press reports tell us that several U.S. citizens are being held in Turkey as abettors of a recent attempted coup against president Recep Erdogan. Among them are a NASA scientist, a chemistry professor, a real estate agent and a Christian missionary.
This is a response to our refusal to extradite Erdogan’s political opponent Fethullah Gulen. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk tried to secularize his country, but his failure is obvious. Turkey is now, under Erdogan, an Islamic autocracy with increasing ties to both Iran and Russia.
Why in the world is this nation a member of NATO? This is madness, and suicidal. Turkey should be expelled from this alliance of democracies before its betrayal of Western values renders NATO completely useless.
