ONE of Floyd Mayweather’s bodyguards was shot in Atlanta on Tuesday (AEST) when a convoy of three cars — one of which included the boxing legend — was targeted.
The Atlanta Police Department confirmed Mayweather was in one of the SUVs, but not the one that came under fire in the early hours of the morning.
The cars drove off and according to police were followed by the shooter’s vehicle before they were able to escape.
“Based off the actions by the shooter, we believe he was familiar with the entourage or the group of vehicles he targeted,” a police officer told reporters.
Mayweather had been partying at the Medusa nightclub before leaving with his team to head back to a hotel. It’s unclear if he was the intended target.
The bodyguard, Gregory La Rosa, was taken to hospital and treated for a lower leg wound before being released around 5.30am.
La Rosa achieved some notoriety during the promotion of Mayweather’s fight against UFC star Conor McGregor last year, after attending some of the press conferences used to hype the bout.
“What’s with these two juiceheads you got?” asked McGregor, at a press conference in London. “You juicehead turkey, and you juicehead turkey (points at body guards). Look where you’re standing now you two f***ing b******! You’ll do f*** all! Juicehead monkey, juicehead monkey (points again).”
La Rosa wasn’t bothered about being singled out by the Irishman, later telling MMA Junkie: “I’m just a security guard off to the back, but he paid mind to me, so thank you, that was fun.”
