The ground turkey recall affects Publix, Aldi and Weis stores throughout Florida, the southeast, as well as New York, Pennsylvania and Connecticut.

The North Carolina-based Prestage Foods is recalling some 38,475 pounds of ground turkey that may be contaminated with “extraneous materials,” the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced Monday.

The contaminated products were sold at Publix supermarkets and Aldi grocery stores in Florida, Alabama, Connecticut, Georgia, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania and Tennessee.

The fresh ground turkey was produced on Sept. 25 and 26, with corresponding use-by dates of Oct. 9 and Oct. 10 of this year.

According to a news release, the problem was discovered on Sept. 27, after Prestage Food’s plant employees performed sanitation on processing equipment and notified the USDA’s inspection service of an issue.

On the same day, one of Prestage’s retail locations noticed metal shavings in a package of ground turkey from the recalling firm, and notified the company.

“There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products,” the release continued. “Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.

“Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.”
