The federal Department of Agriculture is recalling nearly 38,500 pounds of ground turkey, including some packages recently sold in Aldi stores in New York.

Fit & Active fresh ground turkey with natural flavoring may be contaminated by “extraneous material,” the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service said Tuesday.

The recall class indicates “there is a remote probability of adverse health consequences from the use of the product.”

The 1.2-pound white Styrofoam trays have clear plastic film and ink jet printing. Aldi packages being recalled display the first 4 digits of 7268 and 7269.

The products subject to recall bear establishment number “P-22000” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to retail distribution centers in Alabama, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee.

The meat was processed on Sept. 25 and 26 by Prestage Foods, a company based in North Carolina that supplies Publix, Weis Markets and Aldi.

The problem was discovered on Sept. 27, when plant employees sanitizing processing equipment alerted federal authorities of a potential problem. The same day, workers at a supermarket noticed metal shavings inside a package of ground turkey and notified the company.

There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products, according to USDA. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.

Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.
