A special game damage scenario has been identified relevant to wild turkeys in a portion of deer/elk HD 426. The participating landowners are experiencing game damage issues related to wild turkey, and are eligible for game damage assistance from Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks.
In the best interests of the landowners, the public, and resolving this game damage issue, the Lewistown-area MFWP biologist proposes a game damage hunt for turkeys with the following objectives: 1) pressure wild turkeys to move away from the cattle feeding and calving areas on the affected property, 2) harvest a proportion of wild turkeys, lowering the localized population on and around the property, and 3) provide an opportunity for the public to participate.
Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks asks hunters interested in participating in a special, game damage season for wild turkey, to submit their name, phone number and ALS number to FWP in the following manner:
1) Hunters must already have a 2018 turkey license to be eligible to sign up.
2) Contact the Lewistown office by phone or in person. Call the Lewistown Area FWP Office, 538-4658, and leave a message. Staff will return calls after 2 p.m. Visit the office in person at 333 Airport Rd., Lewistown between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. beginning today, Wednesday, March 14.
Sign-ups will not be taken during any other time or by any other means. A total of 25 hunters will be selected on a first-come, first-serve basis.
After signing up through MFWP, and prior to hunting enrolled private land, hunters must contact the landowners to obtain permission and schedule their hunt. Information regarding landowner contact information, hunt rules, regulations, and boundaries will be provided to participating hunters when they sign up. The landowners will accommodate up to two parties of one–two hunters per day. While this hunt extends through March 31, turkeys may move off the affected property sooner and hunting opportunity may end prior to this end date.
Effective dates of this hunt are March 10 through March 31. Any unused 2018 turkey license can be used on this hunt, including a general turkey license and/or any region-specific turkey license. Hunters may purchase and use up to two 2018 turkey licenses for this hunt.
