Mince pies, turkey bones and onions: The 12 Christmas foods you should NEVER give to your dog

Christmas dinner is a huge treat for us humans – but letting your dog join in too can be a bad idea.

Many festive goodies such as mince pies, cake and chocolate are harmful or downright fatal to canines.

Even turkey bones are a no-no as they splinter too easily and can cause choking.

Experts recommend drawing up two lists of “Nice” and “Naughty” foods which are safe or should be avoided.

Even turkey skin isn’t good for dogs because of its fatty content

Dr Maeve Moorcroft, head of pets at Pets at Home, said: “Diet is essential when it comes to health and wellbeing, but with all the delicious smells and tastes of Christmas it can be tempting to treat your furry friend too.

“Some human foods are okay to feed to your dog, but should be strictly limited to foods from the ‘Nice’ list and served in very small quantities only.

“We’d recommend giving your pet some new toys instead, or pet-friendly versions of mince pies and candy canes.”
