Minnesota OSHA investigates man’s fatal fall at turkey manure power plant – Twin Cities

BENSON, Minn. — Minnesota’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the death of a man who died last week after a fall at the Benson Power plant in west-central Minnesota.

Almost a week later, the police have not yet released the name of the man, though family members have been notified. The investigation into the incident is ongoing with OSHA, Benson police said Wednesday, so the name isn’t being released.

The death occurred at the 55-megawatt biomass plant that burns turkey manure mixed with wood chips to produce electricity that it supplies to Xcel Energy. Xcel plans to close the plant, which was formerly known as FibroMinn. It’s a move the company said will save Xcel customers money.

The accident occurred about 3:15 p.m. last Wednesday. According to KMSP-TV, the man fell into a biomass hopper.

Lifesaving measures were attempted at the scene and the victim was transported to the Benson hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to police.
