President Erdogan says the domestic car model is a dream of the nationEPA

President Erdogan has laid out plans to launch Turkey’s own car marque in an effort to boost both the fragile economy and national prestige.

Calling the domestic car model a “dream of the Turkish nation”, Mr Erdogan said that a prototype would be completed in 2019 and the first cars would roll off the line in 2021. “I want to own the first new automobile,” he said. “We will produce Turkey’s car with the best design and technology, both for our country and the world.”

Turkey manufactures cars and parts for some of the world’s best-known companies, including Ford and Toyota, with exports worth $28 billion (£21 billion) last year. But aside from a short-lived attempt in the 1960s, it has never produced a home-grown…
