I hated Christmas as a kid. My parents were first-generation working-class Pakistani Muslims and they refused to let us join in the festivities. Christmas in Luton as a young boy meant no tree, no presents and no turkey. I would spend every December 25 bored out of my mind, silently envious of my friends, who were no doubt unwrapping gifts while I willed the day to end.

My dad enjoyed reminding his children that we were not like our white friends — we had our own festivals and, unlike those loser white Christians who only got one Christmas, us lucky Muslims got two Eids every year.
