Mr Erdoğan’s remarks are Turkey’s strongest statement of support for Qatar to date in the diplomatic crisis, which began when the four Arab states imposed a blockade on Qatar on June 5th.

The list of demands to end the blockade, which were issued with a ten-day deadline for compliance, include closing the Al Jazeera television network, closing a Turkish military base, downgrading ties with Iran and extraditing alleged terrorists.

Qatar on Saturday said the ultimatum was “not reasonable”.

The Turkish president specifically said the Arab states’ demand that Turkey close its military base in Qatar was “a disrespect” towards his country.
