Toast absent friends and present foes over the turkey | Comment

Christmas is the perfect time to remember those who are no longer with us. But extend the goodwill to all, be they saint or Scrooge

Family Christmas dinner is not generally the best time for toasts. It is, of course, prudent to call for a glass to be raised to the cook (in our case my husband, who as you read will be tending his 37th festive turkey). I suppose if anyone at the table has just had a baby or got engaged, one could drink to that. But I doubt that many households, except conceivably the Rees-Moggs, go further into the formalities of the business, rising for The-Queen-God-bless-her and knocking off congratulatory speeches, as if at another kind of annual dinner.

But there is one health we always drink over the sprouts, one toast. Somehow Christmas feels like the right moment for it: “absent friends!”. It is, as Dickens…
