Recently, Turkey Creek Golf Course in McPherson was recognized as one of the top 10 public golf courses in Kansas. “Best Things in Kansas,” powered by Americantowns Media, completed a study and decided that Turkey Creek made the grade.

“We’re very proud that our course made it into the top 10. I know our members love playing here and our staff do a really good job taking care of the golf course,” said Treg Fawl, Turkey Creek Golf Course program coordinator. “We’re very glad they recognized us as the fourth best public golf course in the state of Kansas.”

The results were based on a variety of attributes, including maintenance and accessibility. Turkey Creek ranked number four on the list. Public golf courses differ from private courses in that they focus efforts on accessibility in the community, in addition to maintaining a membership base.

“If a course is open to the public, the key is getting people there to play it,” Fawl said. “We do a lot with advertising and making sure it looks nice because the biggest thing is promoting it, through putting on tournaments and getting that out-of-town play, in addition to keeping up with our members.”

Turkey Creek Golf Course is a par 70, 18-hole course. According to the study, Turkey Creek will challenge golfers of all skill levels.

“It’s not an overly difficult, but you still need to pay attention to it and really play some good golf to do well out here. I think it’s a course where all different levels of golfers can play and enjoy it,” Fawl said. “It’s not one of courses that are super hard or super easy. We have junior tournaments and they seem challenged and enjoy being here, and our senior golfers also have a good time playing out here in the morning.”

Built in 1990 with bluegrass fairways and bent grass greens, this course offers golfers a well-maintained course and great conditions for great round of golf.

“It’s a team effort all around. Jason Buschbom is our head superintendent and he and his guys are the main reason why the course looks so nice. They’re out here working every day. The city of McPherson and Wayne Burns, the public lands and facilities director, do a great job helping us out and keeping us going,” Fawl said. “Even the members let us borrow some of their carts this week for the huge tournament we had. It’s a great community and we just enjoy all the people who help make this course what it is.”
