BEIRUT, LEBANON (4:45 P.M.) – Turkey is ready to answer Armenia’s proposal to normalize relations, but only if Yerevan refuses its hostile attitude towards Ankara, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said.
As Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan told journalists on Wednesday, Armenia is ready to establish relations with Turkey without preconditions.
“If Armenia renounces its longstanding hostile stance towards Turkey, its borders and territorial integrity, and wants to open a new page, we will consider this and give an appropriate answer, taking into account the interests of our country, Yiildirim stated.
“We do not want to be at odds with anyone , especially with neighbors, “Yildirim told journalists.
There are currently no diplomatic relations between Turkey and Armenia.
The border between the two countries has been closed since 1993 on the initiative of Ankara.
The complicated relations between the two countries are caused by a number of circumstances connected, in particular, with Ankara’s support of the Azerbaijani position in the Karabakh conflict and Turkey’s sharp reaction to the process of international recognition of the Armenian genocide of 1915 in the Ottoman Empire.
