Turkey pushes USt to end visa suspension: report

Turkey is reportedly pushing the United States to end its visa suspension, which followed the arrest of a Turkish employee at the U.S. consulate in Istanbul.

According to Reuters, the visa suspension caused the Turkish lira to decrease in value, meanwhile Turkey also ceased its own visa services for U.S. citizens.

Turkey’s foreign ministry described “unnecessary tensions” when it called upon a United States diplomat to end the visa restriction, the news outlet said.

The U.S. Embassy in Turkey on Sunday announced that it halted “all non-immigrant visa services,” a move which came after the arrest of the consulate employee last week. The U.S. Embassy in Ankara said it was “deeply disturbed” by the arrest of the employee, who was detained over terror charges.

“Recent events have forced the United States Government to reassess the commitment of the Government of Turkey to the security of U.S. Mission facilities and personnel,” the U.S. Embassy in Ankara said Sunday regarding the visa halt.
