Minister of Industry and Technology announced that Turkey was planning to establish a scientific base in Antartica, Anadolu Agency reported on Apr. 11.
“Next year, we will go there [in Antarctica] to establish our scientific base and the foundations of Turk Scientific Base will be laid,” Minister Faruk Özlü told to Anadolu Agency.
According to Özlü, Turkey at the moment has an ‘observatory state’ in Antarctica and will apply for the status of ‘advisory state’ after completing the construction of its base. “The advisory states are those who have a say in Antarctica’s today and tomorrow,” Özlü noted.
Turkey is among the signatories of the 1959 Antarctic Treaty which regulates scientific research studies to be conducted in Antartica.
