Turkey has deployed a warship in the eastern Mediterranean to monitor a drilling ship suspected of searching for oil and natural gas off the coast of ethnically divided Cyprus, Associated Press reported July 13. Greek Cyprus, in the south, announced it would begin drilling operations following the dissolution of reunification talks with the Turkish Cypriot north. Turkey, a strong ally of the northern side of the island, opposes the drilling efforts, claiming they infringe on Turkish Cypriot’s mineral wealth.
