Jamie Maclaren’s axing from the Socceroos World Cup squad was hardly met with fondness from the Australian football community on social media.
The Hibernian striker was left out of Bert van Marwijk’s 26-man squad for a pre-Russia training camp in Antalya, Turkey, including friendlies against the Czech Republic and Hungary.
Maclaren joined Alex Gersbach, Apo Giannou, Mitch Langerak, Bailey Wright and Aleksandar Susnjar as omissions from the squad, announced on Tuesday morning.
That is despite his eight goals in 13 games for Hibs in Scotland, on loan from German side Darmstadt, and weekend hat-trick in a thrilling 5-5 draw against Rangers.

Is Bert going to face up to questioning about this? An absolute disgrace that Maclaren’s not there. https://t.co/z1ZiCSGFqk

Giannou and MacLaren out of the World Cup squad; it’s alright, it’s not like you need goals to win football matches #ohwait

Feel very disappointed for Jamie Maclaren right now . He’s scoring goals , something most of our Socceroos squad doesn’t do at present . Not sure what Van Marwijk’s plan is , but it better be a good one . #socceroos #WorldCup2018

Many people have called for McLaren’s place over the past few months. Puts together a super couple weeks and then doesn’t get picked. Unlucky? Maybe. But I have a feeling Bert knows what he is doing. #InBertWeTrust

This Jamie Maclaren decision is ludicrous. Again what message does this send to young players……

So many bagging Tim Cahill. Remember, Australia wouldn’t be at the World Cup if it weren’t for him. No-one else can score, fact! IMO, both he and Maclaren should be selected.
