Wolf and chevrotain hunters fined over 20,000 Turkish Liras in Turkey’s east

Authorities have identified and fined six people a total of 21,772 Turkish Liras for killing a wolf and chevrotain and sharing photos on social media in Erzurum in eastern Anatolia, Doğan News Agency reported on Dec. 12.

The man who killed the wolf was fined 6,045 liras and the chevrotain hunters received a penalty of 15,727 liras in total, a statement released by the City Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks said.

Just on Dec. 6, Doğan News agency reported two men had drawn a blast of criticism from around the country after a selfie with a lynx they had hunted spread on social media.

Erzurum’s Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks had begun a probe into the hunters and the men were eventually fined 8,818 liras, Doğan News Agency reported the following day.

In Turkey, the fine for shooting endangered species that are protected by law is only 6,000 liras, roughly around $2,000.
